Tobias Zielony
I was flicking through Steidl’s new photography compendium Photography Calling! when I was smacked in the face by the work of Tobias Zielony. Zielony’s talents were noted early and rewarded with grants to shoot in New York and LA. My has it paid off. Expect despondent American youths and murky fog-drenched urban landscapes.

GOLFWANG
Picturebox publishers have released Golfwang, the first printed edition of the namesakes blog. Golfwang showcases the point-and-shoot work of Odd Future’s Tyler The Creator, Julian Berman and friends. Smoking, skating, toe sucking(?), this book is overwhelmingly blithe and testimony to the exultation of being young. I want to be 18 again.

VERITIES
With art and culture magazines now ten a penny, it takes something special to make a splash. Verities splashes. The first issue is the ‘Power’ issue and features projects and interviews from Laurie Anderson and Ian Sinclair as well as some great literary débuts. This biannual has a plethora of interesting visual and written content and I have a feeling it may be a collectible.

GRAPHIC DESIGN NOW IN PRODUCTION: WALKER ART CENTER
It’s clear that putting this catalogue together was no small feat. It leaves no design stone unturned from research projects to book design. And, unlike other more commercial design compendiums, the projects included (and there are hundreds) are all top quality and the catalogue design itself is a wonder to behold. Unfortunately the accompanying exhibition at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis has now passed. It’s not too late to pick up a copy of the catalogue however. Get it at Artwords.

PAUL GERHARD DIEZ: TRAVELLING ACROSS THE USA
This great little book records one man’s travels across America during the summer of ‘54. Hitch-hiking from place to place, Diez made quite an epic journey and his dedicated documentation allows us to travel right along side him.

MIROSLAV TICHY
Foto Torst have put together a pocket-sized collection of the work of Czech photographer Miroslav Tichy. The elusive artist used home made cameras built from anything to hand. Using these low-fi weapons of voyeurism, Tichy captured thousands of images of the women of his hometown, many unknowingly. The result is murky,sinister and yet undoubtedly sexually charged photographs.

JULIAN GERMAIN: FOR EVERY MINUTE YOU ARE ANGRY YOU LOSE 60 SECONDS OF HAPPINESS
Since we’re on the topic of English photographers, let me introduce Julian Germain. He may need an introduction if like me a few days ago, you didn’t know who he was (despite the fact that this was released in 2005). It’s back by popular demand. Germain stumbled upon his subject, a recently widowed flower seller on the way to a football match. The book captures the pensioner as he immerses himself in his geraniums and the memories of his wife to heart-warming effective. It’s hard not to be charmed by it.

THIS IS ENGLAND: DANIEL MEADOWS
Edited Photographs From The 70s and 80s shares Meadow’s documentation of our charming island. The photographs, taken on a journey across the UK in a double-decker/studio, are an insight into urban society of the era. The body of work is astonishing, Meadows even took the time to interview many of the subjects.

MONO EDITIONEN #3 / TARYN SIMON
Wow. What can I say? Pick your favourite person this year and give them this for Christmas. Mono have combined their edition of Mono Kultur #15 (Taryn Simon: Kaleidoscope of Entropy) with the new Mono Editionen #3 on Simon’s recent Tate Exhibition A Living Man Declared Dead And Other Chapters. Both delicately packaged in a photographers’ glassine envelope. The plates of her incredible photographs from A Living Man come unbound. The free-floating format of this little gem allows you to completely personalise your experience of the show; spread the plates out, frame them etc. I love this detail.

A TOAST TO THOMAS!
The Toaster Project follows Thomas Thwaites eccentric mission to build a humble toaster from scratch. The project has been much documented online so here’s the chance to own it in illustrated book form. I had the pleasure of hearing the man himself speak about this noble ambition with It’s Nice That last year. The project covers so much ground; from sustainability to capitalism. Thwaite’s is the type of chap that you will to succeed.
